109. Be Strong and Courageous: How to Step into Your Calling When you Feel Unqualified

Alexandra Graff-Alvarez

Feeling unqualified for what God is calling you to do? In this episode of Curious for Christ, Alexandra dives into Joshua 1:1–9 and shares how God called Joshua to lead Israel into the Promised Land—and how the same three anchors God gave Joshua can help you step courageously into your own calling.

You’ll learn:

  • How God’s presence, promises, and Word anchor you when the path feels uncertain.
  • Practical steps to live courageously this week, even when you feel unprepared.
  • Why courage is a choice, and how to enter your “promised land” one step at a time.

Alexandra also shares her personal story of navigating new seasons in life, business, and faith—and how trusting God’s presence keeps her moving forward, even when she doesn’t have all the answers.

Takeaways from this episode:

  1. Name Your Territory – Identify one area of life where God is calling you to step forward.
  2. Marinate in Truth – Pick a verse from Joshua 1:1–9 and speak it over yourself daily.
  3. Take One Courageous Step – Act in faith today, without waiting for perfect conditions.

Scripture Focus: Joshua 1:1–9, Joshua 3–4, Joshua 9, Joshua 23:14, Psalm 131

Prayer:

“Lord, thank You for going with us into every unknown. Today, we choose to believe Your promises, anchor ourselves in Your Word, and trust Your presence over our fear. Give us courage to take the next step, and eyes to see that You’ve already gone ahead of us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

Hi friends and welcome back to Curious for Christ. Welcome. For those who are new, I'm Alexandra, and today we're diving into Joshua one verses one through nine. So Joshua is to lead Israel into the promised land after Moses' death. And God tells him, be strong and courageous to not be afraid for the Lord. Your God is with you wherever you go. This is a passage we discussed in my Bible talk this week, and I wanted to share what I learned with you. Sometimes those words feel like they're meant for someone else, someone braver, more prepared. Maybe that's where you are today, whether in your faith, career, family, or a dream God has placed on your heart, you are not alone. That is me as well, and this episode is for you. Welcome to Curious for Christ. Do you ever find yourself lying, awake at night wondering about God's plan for your life? Maybe you wake up with big dreams, but feel unsure where to start or what your next step should be. If you're curious about exploring your faith and finding purpose, then you've come to the right place. Hi, I'm Alexandra. I too felt lost and sure of the direction my life was taking. I yearned to understand my purpose and have someone guide me, but I kept telling myself I was too busy. The timing wasn't right, and my lack of clarity prevented me from being consistent until I found Christ. He brought peace into my life and revealed the way to find purpose by anchoring myself. In him. In this podcast, we'll journey together exploring the Bible to gain a deeper understanding of him and cultivate your own personal relationship with Christ. So open up your Bible, put in those earbuds and listen up because God is speaking to you. He's making everything new and you don't wanna miss it. Let's get started. So number one. Let's talk about the setup. So Joshua's situation is our situation. Joshua steps into Moses' shoes. That's an enormous responsibility. It involves uncharted territory and enemies ahead. He also is to lead a grieving, tired people. And maybe it feels like the pack. Maybe he feels like the backup plan. And God doesn't give him a 10 step strategy. He gives him presence and promises, and we'll talk about that shortly. For us, stepping into a new season can feel just as intimidating, whether it's a job, a conversation, a ministry calling, or a family shift, just like the start of a school year can feel like starting over. My children actually just started middle school and high school, and everything is new again. And so you might be tempted to think it used to be easier when they were little, or this would be easier for someone else who has done it before and knows what to do. Number two, God three anchors to Joshua and to us. Anchor number one, God's promise from verses three through six. Every place you set your foot, I have given you. I will never leave you nor forsake you. God has already assigned your territory. You don't have to create your worth. It is yours regardless. And for me, I encourage my kids to be strong and courageous. I walk alongside them just as God walks with us, but they do the work that is theirs already with school. Inca, number two, God's word. Verses seven through eight. Be careful to obey all the law. Meditate on it day and night, then you will be prosperous and successful. Success in God's terms starts with scripture. That shapes our thinking. It's not just by doing tasks and following all the advice you hear out there that can quickly become exhausting and discouraging. And for us, this is what it means. You have to let your thoughts marinate in truth, not fear or comparison, and be anchored with God, so you also recognize the lies that come your way. Remaining in the word really helps us stay steadfast rather than scattered. Anchor number three, God's presence. From verse nine, do not be afraid for the Lord. Your God is with you wherever you go. Courage isn't the absence of fear. It's moving forward because he is with you. Feel your fears. I feel deeply and I realize that I need to feel my feelings, but they are not the truth, nor are they my anchor. And for us, this is what it means. You don't need certainty to obey. You need awareness of his near net. With all the fields, don't try to change them. They are what they are. Acknowledge them, feel them. But seek God's presence instead. Number three, practical steps to live this out this week. So here are three steps. Number one, name your territory. Write down one area of life where God is asking you to step forward. Number two, marinate in truth. Choose a verse from Joshua one verses one through nine, and say it out loud every morning. Number three, take one courageous step. Don't wait for perfect conditions. Do one thing today that aligns with God's call number four. So now a bit of encouragement or let me reflect back to you what we just spoke about. If you hold fast to God's word. And step in obedience and believe his presence is with you. You can succeed in the purpose he's given you. Even if it doesn't look like anyone else's path. No need to compare, and that's true for me too. Right now I'm in real estate, but my heart also loves acting and these podcasts sharing about what God is doing in my life. And I'm learning to navigate business and relationships in new ways, and I don't know how it will all come together, but like David said in Psalm 1 31, and I'm gonna read it to you, he said, I do not concern myself with great matters or things too wonderful for me, but I have stilled and quieted my soul like a weed child with its mother, like a weed child is my soul within me. Oh, Israel. Oh, Alexandra, oh, Sophia. Put your hope in the Lord, both now and forevermore. I've had detours, I've had losses and uncertainty, but I've discovered I can be in harmony with him and now without needing to know how everything will unfold. And I'm saying this because I've tried and I see that it is actually a waste of time to try to figure it out. It's not mine to do. I can lose a lot of sleep over this and perhaps I have. When I doubt, I go back to the Bible and I study some more. So Joshua had three anchors from God. Was it enough? Did he succeed? Well, let's see. Number five, did Joshua succeed? Let's see what happens next in the book of Joshua. Yes, he did, and not perfectly but faithfully, he led Israel into the Promised Land. As we see in Joshua three and four, he followed God's battle strategies like Jericho. He made mistakes, like we see in Joshua nine with the GI Night Treaty. They had tricked him, but then he returned to obedience and at the end of his life he could say, not one of all the good promises the Lord your God gave you has failed. Joshua 23 verse. 14. That gives me peace. Number six, what this means for you, three things. Your promised land in business ministry or personal growth, family is entered step by step. Number two, God's presence is your qualifier, not your resume, not your resources. So God is here. That is where you are to be and that is enough. And number three, courage is a choice. God wouldn't command it if it only came naturally. So the bottom line, hold fast to God's word. Keep stepping in obedience and trust his presence. You can't succeed in your purpose, even if it looks different from anyone else's path. God alone is enough. Let's pray. Lord, thank you for going with us into every unknown. Like Joshua. We don't always feel ready Today. We choose to believe your promises, anchor ourselves in your word, and trust your presence over our fear. Give us courage, God, to take the next step and eyes to see that you've already gone ahead of us. And I prayed all this in the name of your son Jesus. Amen. That's it for today.
