34. How the Spiritual Desert can be a place of Deep Transformation and Hope (My Story of Faith, Summer Series - 6/8)

Alexandra Alvarez | Spiritual Coach

Summary:

This episode picks up where the previous one left off, exploring my second - and subsequent 9 - years of marriage and my move to Florida. Despite the physical change, my internal struggles continued.

I discussed the challenges of living with my mother-in-law, who was battling disappointment and bitterness. This led to feelings of anger and disappointment directed towards God, questioning why He would take my mother and then give me another unavailable mother figure.

I reflected on the importance of finding fulfillment in God alone, rather than relying on external people and circumstances.

My mother-in-law sadly passed away a year later, and I acknowledged that while it was a time of grief, it also allowed my husband to spend time with his mother and potentially share our faith with her.

The episode concludes with a message of hope. I shared my pregnancy and highlighted that even in times of difficulty, God is present. I referenced Ecclesiastes to illustrate that there is a time for everything, including sorrow and joy.

Scriptures:

  • Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 (NIV)
  • 1 John 1:7 (NIV)
  • Passages about the desert experience can be found in the books of Numbers, Exodus and Deuteronomy

Key Points:

  • Physical location doesn't change our internal struggles or God's work in our lives.
  • It's important to find fulfillment in God alone.
  • Even in hardship, God can bring about good.
  • God's ways are higher than our own.

Additional Points:

  • The Israelites' journey through the desert in Exodus and Deuteronomy is referenced as a time of testing and transformation for God's people.
  • While my experience wasn't as literal as the Israelites' desert experience, it felt like a desolate and difficult period.
